Growing seedlings

Today all methods of growing seedlings belong to 2 -phase or 2-stage.

At the first stage, seeds are sown in a container with a small volume of peat mixture (cassettes, seedling adsorption tablets, boxes, etc.).

And at the second stage, seedlings dive for phases 1-2 of a true leaf into pots with a volume of 0.5 l. The exception is cucurbits (cucumber, watermelon, melon, zucchini, squash, etc.), the seeds of which can be sown immediately in pots.

Why are plants not sown immediately in pots? Why are peat mixtures first sown in containers with a small volume? After sowing, some of the seeds will not germinate, some will give weak, deformed seedlings, they will have to be culled. Therefore, the picking of seedlings after the first stage ensures the selection of the best, more powerful plants, equal in size, to the pots. In addition, modern methods make it possible to mechanize the sowing process.

In addition, unlike picking, which was done 30-40 years ago, when transplanting seedlings, the roots remain undamaged, being preserved as much as possible. It is also possible to deepen the seedlings if the cotyledon knee is slightly elongated. All this played a big role in the growing popularity of 2-stage seedling production methods.

Details about consumables and operations with seedlings in the series of articles:

  • first stage -"Seedling pills" (an effective consumable that allows you not to injure the roots when digging) or" Cassettes for growing seedlings" (types of cassettes, advantages of their use, high-quality seeds as a prerequisite for success, recommendations for choosing cassettes);
  • second stage -"Growing seedlings in pots" (growing seedlings in pots of various species, an alternative to them; operations on arranging seedlings in pots to obtain high-quality, strong plants).

Seedling adsorbing pills (tablets) are a popular material for the production of seedlings. When moistened, they dramatically increase their volume and shape. As the plants grow, they are easy to dive into pots without damaging the root system. But there are also nuances, which we will talk about in the article.
