The main difference between aerodynamic and sieve separators is that the former separate the grain mixture into fractions based on the specific weight and buoyancy of its components, and the latter - by size. It is the weight, not the size, that is the main indicator of the integrity and biological value of the seeds, sifting out injured, weak and split grains. Separation by weight makes it possible to select heavy, dense, maximally nutritious grains.

The aerodynamic separator can work in 4 modes:
- pre-cleaning mode;
- primary cleaning mode;
- grain calibration mode;
- mixed mode (simultaneous cleaning and calibration).
