The higher the soil temperature, the better and faster nitrogen from urea is assimilated. It has less effect on very acidic or recently limed soils. Less effective also on overmoistened, cold soils and when applied in early spring on winter crops. They are trying to work urea into the soil, because the losses during surface application are 20-30% higher than with nitrates.
