Hydrazine hydrate (diamide) — N2H4*H2O is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant ammonia smell. Hydrazine hydrate is miscible with water and ethyl alcohol, does not dissolve in diethyl ether, chloroform, and benzene.
Hygroscopic, absorbs CO2 in the air. Hydrazine hydrate has an alkaline reaction. A strong restorer. Destroys glass and rubber. Hot vapors of the reagent explode when in contact with air.
Hydrazine hydrate is used:
— to remove oxygen during water treatment; for corrosion protection of water and steam circulation pipelines, as well as for conservation of decommissioned equipment
— for obtaining pure metals (Cu, Ni, etc.) from their oxides and salts
