Tall ryegrass (Arrenatherum elatius J. ct C. Presl) belongs to the perennial ryegrass. Stems angled-rising, height up to 180 cm. The root system is fibrous, penetrates to a depth of up to 280 cm. The inflorescence is a panicle. The fruit is light green. The weight of 1000 seeds is 2.7 g.
In cold winters with little snow, tall ryegrass freezes. Drought resistance is low. It does not tolerate the proximity of groundwater and flooding. It grows well on chernozem soils. With bare crops, it gives a good harvest of hay in the first year of its life. It lasts for 4–5 years in the herbage.
Differing in early maturity, it gives high-quality fodder when used early. According to the Research Institute of Fodder, 100 kg of hay of this crop contains 11.7% protein and 46 fodder. units.

In the event of a delay in harvesting, the above-ground mass quickly coarsens, and hay is not always willingly eaten by cattle due to its bitter taste.
