About the Chandler Chandler walnut variety
Chandler is our best-selling walnut variety. It was developed by the University of California. In recent years, Chandler has been the most preferred walnut variety for new orchards because of its high productivity and excellent nut quality.
Harvest: Chandler is a highly productive variety. This variety bears fruit on lateral (side) branches, fruits are formed on 90 percent of its side branches. Therefore, it gives very high yields. You can start
picking fruits already 3 years after you plant the trees. Check the performance table below this page to see performance by year.
Quality of nuts and shells: Chandler produces large nuts with thin shells and very light kernels. The thin shell and the color of the kernel are considered important characteristics when determining the price
sale of walnuts. Walnuts with a lighter kernel color are sold at a higher price. Its kernels are easily removed from the shell and easily split in half even with two fingers!
Tree size: Chandler grows moderately vigorously and almost vertically. Chandler is suitable for planting with high density, according to the scheme of 6 x 5 meters. More detailed information about the distance between trees is presented on this page.
The period of the beginning of vegetation: Chandler is a variety of the late beginning of vegetation. This is an advantage, because late varieties are not affected by spring frosts, walnut rot and moth.
Pollination: Chandler is a self-pollinating variety, it can produce walnuts without a pollinator. But you will get a higher yield when growing with a pollinator. The Frankett variety is used as a pollinator for Chandler.
Rootstock: For growing
seedlings Chandler walnut rootstock Juglans regia (known as English walnut) is used. This is usually the preferred double due to its resistance to black spot disease.

CHANDLER Walnut Harvest:
Chandler starts producing walnuts very early. Your trees will be 2 years old when you receive them. It begins to bear fruit even in the first hour after planting. However, in order to preserve the energy of the tree and increase the yield in the following years, we recommend plucking the ovaries during the first 3 years or giving good nutrition to the tree and start harvesting immediately.
