Black walnut, like all other representatives of the nut family, are powerful filters that clean the air of dust, soot, chemicals and other substances - production waste, as well as exhaust gases. Thanks to the powerful crown and the total area of the leaf surface, it releases a huge amount of not only oxygen into the air, absorbing CO2, but also phytoncides, which kill disease-causing bacteria. There are tannins in the bark and other parts of the nut. Juglone, an antibiotic substance released by the leaves, ionizing the air, fills it with microparticles of iodine, which is useful for preventive and health-improving breathing, has a special value, as in walnuts.
Black walnut is one of the most beautiful wood species. This is a real decoration of parks and squares. It has a number of useful properties, but it is valued primarily for the high quality and beauty of the wood. It is extremely hard, strong, dark brown in color, has a beautiful texture and is used to decorate palaces and ceremonial rooms, make precious furniture and souvenirs. Anyone who has visited the Maikop Drama Theater has obviously paid attention to its wonderful decoration of black walnut wood. Walnut wood veneer is not inferior in beauty to walnut and imported extremely expensive mahogany, and even surpasses it in texture. With full reason, it can be considered that black walnut is a rival of mahogany and walnut. The yield of veneer from 50-60-year-old black walnut wood is 2-2.5 times higher than from oak, and its cost is 3.5 times higher. Black walnut wood is much more valuable than our local species, including beech. In the United States, this breed is literally adored, because one adult walnut tree 50-60 m high costs 5 thousand dollars there. In Yugoslavia, black walnut is considered to be the most profitable crop.
The well-known pomologist L. P. Simyrenko also highly valued black walnut. He wrote: "It is surprising that this beautiful breed is so little common in our country, meanwhile, black walnut is better than nothing for arranging shady alleys, high fences, and it is also very beautiful in single plantings." A black walnut tree planted by him (experimental horticulture station) serves as a living monument to Lev Platonovych.
