Crimean Tatars are a Turkic people historically formed in Crimea and the Northern Black Sea Region; together with the few Karaims and Krymchaks, the Crimean Tatars belong to the indigenous population of the Crimean Peninsula. There are large diasporas in Turkey, Uzbekistan, on the mainland of Ukraine, and in some other Eastern European countries. They speak the Crimean Tatar language, which is part of the Kipchak subgroup of the Turkic group of the Altai language family.
The process of formation of the Crimean Tatar ethnos was finally completed in the period of the Crimean Khanate (mid-15th - late 18th centuries).
