The feeding diet of high-yielding cows often contains an insufficient amount of structural fiber or an excess of easily digestible carbohydrates.

Such situations negatively affect the function of the rumen and lead to an increase in the production of lactic acid in it and a decrease in the pH level in the rumen. If the saliva that is produced is not enough to counteract the increased level of acidity, and the pH level in the rumen falls below 5.5, subclinical acidosis of the rumen occurs.

Acidosis of the rumen
Rumen acidosis is one of the most common problems in modern dairy farming and occurs in many farms where the diet is dominated by concentratedforages and carbohydrates. It causes a decrease in food intake, deterioration of digestion and loss of productivity due to an increase in the need for energy to maintain metabolism; the body's immune reactions are disturbed, fertility decreases, additional problems with hooves (laminitis) arise.

To prevent acidosis of the rumen, as a rule, sodium bicarbonate is used, which acts as a kind of buffer. However, such measures have only a temporary effect, since sodium bicarbonate is highly soluble and is quickly consumed by the cow.
