- Cunninghamia lanceolate (Cunninghamia lanceolata) -
An evergreen tree for the southern regions of Ukraine. Widespread in the territory of Central and South-Western China; forms extensive forests in the mountains at an altitude of 800-1300 m. in conditions of a moderately warm and humid climate. The height of the trunk: can reach 50 meters.
Crown: pyramidal.
Branches: arranged along the trunk almost in a spiral. The linear-lanceolate leaves are hard, leathery, almost 7 cm long and sickle-shaped. The light, soft wood of Cunninghamia is widely used in construction. They also make paper from it and obtain
essential oil. In the greenhouse, the tree reaches a height of 8 m at the age of 15 years. Ornamental plants include species of the endemic Chinese genus Cunninghamia, named after J. Cunningham, who discovered these beautiful coniferous plants in 1702. Currently, this genus is represented by only two species. One of them grows in Central and Southern China, occasionally in northern Vietnam, and the second is endemic to Taiwan. Both are slender trees up to 50 m tall. In its fossil state, Cunninghamia is found in the Tertiary sediments of Europe and Japan. One of the species of the genus - Cunninghamia lanceolate (S. Lanceolata, Fig. 205) - the almost spiral arrangement of branches with linear-lanceolate, sickle-shaped, long (up to 7 cm), hard and leathery leaves resembles the Brazilian araucaria. But in terms of its general shape, the lanceolate Cunninghamia differs sharply from it and rather resembles some cypress trees with elongated pyramidal crowns.
