Imazapyr and imazamox enter plant tissues through the phloem and xylem, where they act as inhibitors of the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). Such an enzyme exists only in bacteria and plants, but it is absent in animals. ALS is a catalyst for the biosynthesis of essential amino acids: leucine, valine and isoleucine. Suppression of the formation of ALS by imidazolinones blocks the formation of these essential amino acids and protein synthesis, which causes weeds to die.
