This tree is unique in its winter hardiness. On the American continent, this is the most cold-resistant ofnuts. The natural range extends over the territory of Canada (provinces of New Brunswick and southern Ontario and Quebec). In Eurasia, only the Manchurian walnut has similar frost resistance. The gray walnut normally tolerates winters at the latitude of Moscow, where this tree can be seen in botanical gardens. In the botanical garden of the All-Union Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (VILAR) of the Academy of Sciences (Moscow), trees 40-50 years old have a height of about 15 m and a trunk diameter of about 50 cm. Nuts are spread by squirrels to a distance of up to one kilometer, where they germinate by themselves.

This is a deciduous tree similar to the Manchurian walnut. The walnut got its name "gray" because of the color of the twigs (they have a gray shade, unlike the Manchurian walnut, whose twigs have a cinnamon color).
The leaves are complex, similar in shape to the leaves of the Manchurian walnut, but shorter. Usually the length of the sheet does not exceed one meter. The crown looks very decorative.
Fruits have visible ribs on the surface. The shell of the walnut is tortuous, reminiscent of upturned fish scales. These scales firmly hold the green shell of the nut. It is very difficult to separate it from a nut. From above, the shell is sticky, resinous. The taste is bitter, iodized. It stays green for a long time and often disappears under the snow. All these devices are necessary for protection against proteins. In botanical gardens, they first use Manchurian walnuts for food, and gray ones only in the thaw or in early spring. Nuts that are not covered by leaves or soil lose their germination by spring.
