Breeding history
The Dorper is a South African breed of domestic sheep, bred in the 1930s. by crossing the Dorset Horn breed with a black-headed Persian sheep. These breeds were named from the first syllables and the name "Dorper" (Dorset and Persian) was obtained.
The Dorper breed was created thanks to the efforts of the South African Department of Agriculture, which sought to obtain a breed of meat sheep that can be kept in the most arid regions of the country. Dorpers are currently the second most common breed of sheep in South Africa.

The breed quickly spread around the world. Dorpers have been bred in Europe for more than 20 years.
Characteristics of the breed
Dorper is a hairless breed of sheep, i.e. it has very short straight
smooth wool. Sometimes coarse loosely fitting
hair grows on the back, sides and neck, it sheds in the spring, so Dorpers do not need a haircut. The color is completely white or white with a black head and neck.
Dorper sheep are very good mothers, even at the first lambing they are distinguished by good maternal qualities. The lambs pass very easily due to the slim structure of the skeleton in lambs, their small heads. Lambs after birth are extremely energetic and resilient. It is not uncommon to see smothered lambs within 10 minutes after birth. The breed has early maturation, rams mature in 4-5.5 months, and sheep in 7-8 months. Lambs are weaned from their mothers at the age of 100 days, and with good breeding, they can already be bred with sheep in 6-7 months.
Dorper is a polyester breed. Sheep and rams can breed around the clock. With a good fodder base, sheep can give two litters per hour with an interval of 8 months. Rams have high potency, even in the hottest summer months. A young ram can serve 15-20 sheep, an adult ram can cover 75-100 sheep.
Dorpers can be profitably grazed on poorly used poor pastures of low quality, turning poor assets into profit. Dorpers need less grass for metabolic processes, they are excellent converters of a wide range of fodder species and are not very picky about grasses and fodder. Dorpers pinch young shoots like goats. They have a high ability to adapt to any environment, be it a hot or cold climate; can do without water for two days. Dorper has higher resistance to internal parasites than most other breeds. This allows deworming to be carried out approximately once an hour.
Productivity
The weight of adult rams is 90-140 kg, and sheep - 55-95 kg. Yearling lambs weigh 85-107 kg, and ewes - 55-65 kg. The weight of lambs at birth is 2-5.5 kg, at 30 days - 12-25 kg, at 60 days - 20-40 kg, at 3 months - 24-54 kg, at 6 months - 40-70 kg, at 9 months - 49-75 kg. The growth rate of this breed is exceptional. Lambs have very good gains: about 450-730 g per day. The killing yield is 50-59%.
The breed has good fertility: 150-225%. Sheep give birth to 1-4 lambs. In the first litter, they usually give birth to one lamb, and adult sheep usually give birth to two or three.
Dorper skins are considered one of the best in the world: the skin does not have wrinkles, smooth fat, so they are used in the production of high-quality leather clothing and gloves.
Dorpers are very effective when crossing in increasing growth rates in lambs even in the second generation.
Dorper meat with a thin layer of fat is evenly distributed between bones and muscle fibers. It has a delicate and surprisingly mild taste; without a strong taste
баранины.
