The cardinal-chamberlain, who temporarily becomes the head of the Holy See until the election of the new Pope, must certify the death of the head of the church.
Usually he hits the forehead of the deceased with a silver hammer, and then calls him three times by the name given at baptism. If the pontiff does not answer, the cardinal announces "The Pope is dead." If he answers, then the ritual is repeated again.
