The principle of operation of the starter motor

After starting the starter motor from the PD-10 starter, it is connected to the main engine through the transmission mechanism. Thanks to this, the gearbox receives rotation from the toothed rim of the flywheel and consists of an automatic switch, a multi-disc friction clutch, a gear reduction gear, and an overrunning clutch. When starting the main engine, the automatic starter first engages the gear with the gear flywheel of the starting engine, then the friction clutch is smoothly engaged. The crankshaft of the main engine picks up the rotation frequency until the moment of its independent operation. Then, with the help of the overrunning clutch, it is disconnected from the starting engine.
