CDC Impower is a large green lentil variety developed at the University of Saskatchewan's Crop Development Center (CDC).
Key characteristics:
Type: Large green lentils (Large Green).
Technology: Refers to the Clearfield® system (im-tolerant), which allows the use of specific herbicides to combat weeds in crops.
Productivity: For a long time it was the standard for its group, but new varieties, such as CDC Lima, exceed it in terms of productivity by 13–16%, depending on the type of soil. The CDC Grimm variety also shows a 12% higher yield.
Agronomy: It has average resistance to ascochitosis and anthracnose (race 1), but newer varieties offer improved resistance to lodging and greater seed thickness, which is important for processing (hulling).
This variety is often used as a control sample in regional trials of varieties in Canada to compare the characteristics of new breeding achievements in the class of large green lentils.
Growing lentils
CDC Impower is based on Clearfield® technology, which allows you to effectively control weeds with the help of specific herbicides of the imidazolinone group.

1. Soil preparation and place in crop rotation
Predecessors: Winter and spring cereals (wheat, barley) are the best. It is not recommended to sow after sunflower, legumes, rape or flax because of common diseases.
Return to the field: Not earlier than in 4–5 years.
Soil: Well-drained soil with pH 6.0–8.0. Avoid salty and overmoistened areas.
2. Sowing
Timing: Early, as soon as the soil warms up to +5...6°C at the depth of the backfill. Seedlings withstand short-term frosts up to -5...-6°C.
Sowing rate: For large-seeded varieties (such as CDC Impower) it is 1.8–2.4 million germinated seeds per 1 ha (approximately 120–150 kg/ha).
Sealing depth: 3–6 cm. With a moisture deficit, the depth can be increased to 7–8 cm.
Row spacing: 10–15 cm (row sowing).
3. Fertilizers and protection
Inoculation: Mandatory treatment of
seeds with preparations based on Rhizobium leguminosarum bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
Clearfield system: Use of herbicide (for example, Euro-Lightning® or analogues) in the branching phase of the crop (2–6 leaves).
Fungicides: CDC Impower has medium resistance to ascochitosis and anthracnose, therefore, in conditions of high humidity, prophylactic treatments are required.
4. Cleaning
Vegetation period: 75–90 days.
Method: Direct harvesting at a grain moisture content of 16–18% or separate harvesting if the crops are unevenly ripened or heavily clogged.
Important: To minimize losses during harvesting, the field must be leveled and free of stones.
