(Minnesota 1094 x Rava Noir)
[Minnesota State University, USA]
Marquette is a new promising red grape variety
grape, which combines high resistance to frost and diseases with the excellent quality of wines obtained from it. The variety is named after Pere Marquette, a Jesuit missionary and explorer of North America in the 17th century. The crossing was made in 1989, one of the parents of MS 1094 is a complex interspecies hybrid that has vitis riparia, vitis vinifera and other types of grapes in its pedigree, Rava 262 also has a long pedigree, one of whose parents is Pinot Noir. Marquette was selected from seedlings in 1994. The patent for the plant was obtained in 2006. Average ripening period. The bunches are small to medium in size, the berries are small, round, dark blue. The sugar accumulation of the variety is high, on average 26%, the acidity is higher than average - pH factor 2.9. Apple-milk fermentation is recommended to reduce acidity in wine. Yield 80-100 t/ha. The Marquette grape variety has outstanding frost resistance - the above-ground part of the bush withstands temperature drops to -38 °C, while it has high resistance to fungal diseases (mildew, oidium and black rot), in some years minimal treatment with fungicides is required
fungicides. Moderately resistant to the leaf form of phylloxera. The shoots grow vertically, which minimizes the need for green operations, the bushes are better lit, which in turn improves the quality of the wine. There are usually two bunches per shoot. According to American experts, Marquette is starting a new era of hybrid grape varieties that have high resistance to frost and diseases and produce wines at the level of European varieties. Experimental wines from Marquette are of excellent quality, better than most hybrid varieties. Tasters noted an attractive deep red color, aromas of cherry, black pepper, spices, sometimes with
blackberry tones, plums, tobacco, leather, a moderate structure of tannins. It is suitable for the production of dessert and semi-sweet wines, because of the high sugar content, high-alcohol table wines (at the level of 14%) are recommended for mixing with less sugary varieties. The first results of aging Marquette wine in oak barrels are encouraging, increasing the complexity of the wine, giving it more body and structure. The grape variety is promising for the Upper Midwest and East of the USA (Michigan, New York, New England), as well as for Quebec, Canada. Markett can also have commercial potential in Northern and Eastern Europe.
