Characteristics:
Sodium bicarbonate is a white, odorless, crystalline powder with a salty-alkaline taste. It dissolves in water to form an alkaline solution insoluble in alcohol.
Pharmacological actions:
Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid agent, promotes an increase in the removal of Cl- and Na from the body, shifts the reaction of bronchial mucus to the alkaline side, increases bronchial secretion, osmotic diuresis; reducing the viscosity of sputum, improves expectoration; during absorption, contributes to the development of alkalosis, because alkalinization of urine prevents the deposition of uric acid in the urinary tract; facilitates the tolerance of air and sea sickness; when applied externally, it has weak antiseptic properties.
